National Circus School Plan For Historic West End Church Building

Permission is being sought to alter a historic former Greenock church so that it can be used as a circus school.

An application by Rebecchi Architectural has been made to install lattice beams inside the ex-Finnart St Paul’s building on Newark Street in the West End so that aerial acrobatic skills can be taught.

All circus arts will be involved including ground acts such as juggling, balance ball, contortion, sword swallowing and stilts.

The applicants, who already run Flex UK Circus School locally, stated: “We have put in for Listed Building Consent to install these trusses to the main hall which are essential to us being able to run a circus school.

“The circus school will be a charity and we hope will be of great benefit to all communities in the local area and further afield.

“More details of the circus school will be revealed in due course as it will not be related to Flex UK Circus School and will be named Scotland’s National Circus School.

“Given the church has been unoccupied for so long we hope Historic Scotland will view our plans as a positive step and approve our proposals.”
